Irrigation Master Plan Preparation through Integrated River Basin Planning, Nepal

Asian Development Bank (ADB) is supporting a Water Resources Project Preparatory Facility (WRPPF) to assist the Government of Nepal to ensure that improvements to critically important irrigation, drainage and flood protection schemes as well as water-induced disaster prevention activities are implemented efficiently.

Nepal is endowed with enormous water resources potential annually draining 225 billion cubic meters of water from its more than 6,000 rivers and rivulets. River basins in Nepal are categorized into three types: major basins (Mahakali, Karnali, Narayani, and Kosi), medium basins (Babai, West Rapti, Bagmati, Kamala, and Kankai) and small basins (several southern basins). The four major rivers basins discharge about 80 percent of the country’s annual runoff, medium rivers discharge about nine percent and the rest 11 percent discharge from small southern river basins. In addition, Nepal possesses 8.80 to 11.20 billion cubic meters of groundwater potential mostly in Terai and inner Terai regions. Although irrigation is the major water user of the nation, the available water resources are not fully exploited for irrigation purposes, and agricultural production relies mostly on erratic rainfall conditions.

The main objective of the consulting services is to prepare an Irrigation Master Plan based on river basin management plans, irrigation water use inventory, and irrigation policy.

The framework of consulting services addresses the wide range of activities to be addressed, from economic and social to environmental and technical.

Catchment areas: approx. 145,610 km².
