Khan Khwar Hydropower Project, Pakistan

The Khan Khwar Hydropower Project is located on a tributary of the Indus River in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Lahmeyer International, together with a group of local engineering consultants, has been appointed by WAPDA as the Engineer to oversee the design and construction of this high head hydropower scheme.

The scheme exploits an elevation difference of some 250 m between the Indus River and its tributary, the Khan Khwar. A 30 m high concrete dam on the Khan Khwar will create a reservoir of about 1.1 million cubic meter total capacity out of which 400,000 m3 will be used for four-hour daily peak operation during dry season. Regular flushing in combination with a 200,000 m3 buffer storage will prevent sedimentation.

From intake structure, a concrete lined 4540 m long headrace tunnel with an inner diameter of about 3.8 m will transfer the 35 m3/s design discharge to the surge tank. From there, a vertical pressure shaft and a 425 m long horizontal pressure tunnel will lead to the powerhouse. The gross head will vary from 247 m to 257 m.

The powerhouse will be of the pit-type with 27.5 m of depth subsurface and 15.5 m above ground. It will house two vertical shaft Francis turbine generator sets of 34.25 MW each and one horizontal shaft impulse turbine of 3.65 MW capacity. Tailrace and outlet structure will discharge the water into Indus River. The annual energy production will be 306 GWh of which 105 GWh will be peak energy. An open-air 132 kV switchyard will be located adjacent to the powerhouse and will be connected to the National-Grid.
