Duber Khwar Hydropower Project, Pakistan

The Duber Khwar Hydropower Project is located on a tributary of the Indus River in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan.

Lahmeyer International, together with a group of local engineering consultants, has been appointed by WAPDA as the Engineer to oversee the design and construction of this high head hydropower scheme.

The scheme exploits an elevation difference of over 500 m between the Duber Khwar tributary and the Indus River.

A 30 m high weir on the Duber Khwar will create a reservoir of 536,000 m3 total capacity of which 370,000 m3 will be live storage for four-hour daily peak operation. Flushing will be carried out at regular intervals to prevent sedimentation of the live storage.

From the intake structure, a headrace tunnel of 5243 m length and 3.5 m inner diameter will transfer 29 m3/s design discharge to the surge tank. From there a penstock tunnel of 202 m length and 5 m2 cross section will bring the discharge to a penstock of 1395 m length and 2.6 m diameter (768 m embedded) into the powerhouse. The gross head will vary between 531 m and 540 m. The powerhouse will be conventional open-air. It will house two Pelton turbines of 65 MW each (total capacity 130 MW). The tailrace and outlet structure will discharge the water into the Indus River. The annual production of electricity is estimated at 595 GWh, of which 187 GWh will be peak energy. An open-air 132 kV switchyard will be located adjacent to the powerhouse and connected to the national grid.
