On 23 January 2018, the Serbian energy utility EPS celebrated the successful rehabilitation of the first and second unit of the Hydro Power plant Zvornik. Within this project, Lahmeyer International provided comprehensive consultancy services thus crucially contributing to its successful realisation. The importance of the event was stressed by an illustrious panel of speakers including Aleksandar Antić, Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, Axel Dittmann, Ambassador of The Federal Republic Of Germany in Belgrade, Milorad Grčić, PE EPS Acting Director and Leopold Heninger, Chief Executive Officer and President of Voith Hydro.

Since 2011, Lahmeyer International has been providing consulting services as consortium leader together with South East Europe Consultants Ltd., Serbia. The German Development Bank KfW and EPS jointly provide the funds for the implementation of this rehabilitation project.

Rehabilitation of a hydroelectric power plant from 1955

The Zvornik hydroelectric power plant, which was originally commissioned in 1955, is located on the River Drina about 150 km south-west of Belgrade. It consists of a concrete dam structure with two separate integrated powerhouses and is equipped with four Kaplan turbine-generating units.

Based on a thorough status investigation, the plant operator determined the rehabilitation of the installed equipment, including a significant uprating of the existing units from 25 MW to 31.4 MW each. The rehabilitation mainly comprised replacement / upgrading of all important turbine parts, generators, auxiliary electrical and mechanical systems, step-up transformers, 110 kV switchyard and power plant control system.

Lahmeyer support through all project phases

Lahmeyer supported its customer EPS through all project phases from the review of tender documents and bids to the contract negotiations to the approval of the contractor’s design and the factory acceptance tests. Also concerning the site supervision, EPS could count on the expertise of Lahmeyer. Therefore, the engineering company was able to ensure a smooth process flow for the project.
