The irrigation system of the Lower Bari Doab Canal, southwest of Lahore in the Punjab Province of Pakistan, was built between 1913 and 1917 and covers a command area of approximately 700,000 ha. In order to improve and rehabilitate this system, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Punjab are financing the Lower Bari Doab Canal Improvement Project (LBDCIP), one of the three main components which is the monitoring, modelling and management of the groundwater.
The countywide mapping of groundwater resources is financed by the EU and aims to collect, process and analyse available groundwater data, using a Geographic Information System, and subsequently to present groundwater maps at different scales.
This project encompassed the analysis of the existing cadastre system in the country, and the design and implementation of a new system comprising ESRI's ArcGIS and the open source RDBMS Postgre SQL, for application by the Directorate of Taxes of the Ministry of Economy and Finances in Dakar.
An integral component of the construction phases of this major project was the provision of all topographic construction services required, reference network checking and adjustment, setting out and precision location, excavation and earthworks measurement, progress surveys, and control measurements to ensure quality and accuracy.
As part of the integrated water resources management in the Amran Basin, land cover and land use mapping using multispectral SPOT-5 satellite scenes was prepared and training was provided for the partner staff.
The Merowe Dam project required comprehensive coverage by aerial photography of the dam location, the very extensive potential irrigation areas, as well as the entire area to be inundated by the reservoir. From these results, orthophoto maps were produced and digital terrain models were generated to be used as the base for a geographic information system as well as for further studies.
The objective of the project was to assist the Uzbek Government in the development and implementation of an integrated cadastre system for land resources management and property right registration.
