Rehabilitation of Zvornik Hydroelectric Power Plant in Serbia

After an operation time of almost sixty years the Zvornik Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Drina River needs rehabilitation. Lahmeyer International will provide consultancy services and monitor the entire project. The overall project duration from tendering up to completion will last around seven years.

Composed of two separate powerhouses equipped with 2 x 24 MW turbine-generator units, which are integrated in a concrete dam, the complex is located approximately 150 km south-west of Belgrade. The plant shows age-appropriate wear marks which pose the risk of failure. Based on thorough investigations a comprehensive programme for equipment upgrading and refurbishment has been determined.

The German Development Bank KfW and EPS jointly provide the funds for the necessary implementation of the project. The rehabilitation measures include upgrade and renewal of the technical equipment – including the turbine with auxiliary systems, the generator, the generator bus ducts, and the grid connection with HV switchyards as well as the complete power plant control system.

Lahmeyer International in consortium with a local consultant was contracted for consulting services and supervision of the project implementation. The Lahmeyer experts will review the tender documents, evaluate bids, and assist in contract negotiations among other tasks. Furthermore, review and approval of the contractor’s design, along with performing factory acceptance tests and assisting in the site supervision is within the Lahmeyer scope.
