Sea Water and Brackish Water Desalination Plants

Resources of fresh water are limited in many arid areas of the world where it represents a valuable good which has to be imported or generated by desalination plants. Although desalination processes are energy consuming, sea-water desalination plants can be operated under economically favourable conditions when installed close to consumer’s centre of demand.

Lahmeyer has broad experience in the design of desalination plants with expert knowledge covering all relevant desalination plant types and technologies. Co-generation plants utilizing waste heat from thermal power plants as energy source for the desalination process and solar powered desalination plants represent further fields of our experience. In the following, different desalination technologies are described.

The most commonly used technologies of sea-water desalination are Multi Stage Flash Evaporation (MSF), Multi Effect Desalination (MED), Vapour Compression (VC), and Reverse Osmosis (RO).

The main difference between these processes is the way of energy supply. The evaporation processes MSF and MED use hot steam as energy source, while RO and VC need mechanical work input via electrical energy or combustion processes.
