Mozambique-Malawi Power Interconnection
The Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the Government of the Republic of Malawi de-sire to take advantage of the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), a body established to co-ordinate matters of regional power integration under the auspices of Southern African Development Commu-nity (SADC), by interconnecting their power systems for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
A feasibility study done in 1996 concluded that with an investment of US$ 32 million it would be pos-sible to interconnect Mozambique and Malawi through a 220 kV transmission line from Matambo sub-station (Mozambique) to Blantyre West (Malawi). In order to improve the power flow in Malawi it was decided that the line shall end in Phombeya. The transmission line with a length of about 210 km would be able to transfer at least 200 MW.
